2018-19

Calvin Schmieg was hired as the Associate Band Director after Dr. Sherry Baker left to be the Band Director at Winburn MS. Band enrollment increased by approximately 35% and recruiting/retention efforts were paying off following the redistricting that occurred in 2017.

The halftime show featured music from The Beatles and a second show consisting of the Music of Michael Jackson. The Marching Band also appeared in the BSHS Homecoming Parade, Veterans Day Parade and the Lexington Christmas Parade.

Symphonic Band chamber ensembles performed at the Station Arts Open House in September.

The Brass Quintet for the opening of the Hughes & Colman Law office on New Circle Road on the first day of classes. They also performed on Veterans Day at Mary Todd ES.

The Jazz Combos performed at The University of Kentucky's awards dinner and the reception prior to our Area Concert.

The Bryan Station Area Concert was held in our gym in November.  Bands from Bryan Station MS, Winburn MS and Leestown MS performed along with our Jazz, Concert and Symphonic Bands.  We ended the concert with the combined Area Band performing the Defender Fight Song.

Zach Henz (Clarinet) made it to the 2nd Round All-State auditions.

The Station Arts Gala occurred in December. The Band performed Symphonic Prelude on Adeste Fidelis by Claude T. Smith.  The Jazz Band performed Theme From Shaft.

The UK Honors Band weekend was held the first weekend in February.  We had 4 students selected.  They were: Rebekah Dutton (Flute), Zach Henz (Clarinet), Josie Grant (Trumpet), Breyona Calloway (Trombone).

Kate Jones (Flute) was selected to the Asbury University All-Star Band Clinic and the All-District Concert Band.

Lauren Fields (Flute) was selected to the University of Louisville Honor Band

KMEA Solo & Ensemble Assessment was held at Lexington Catholic HS. The following were awarded:

Distinguished Ratings: Erin Kendall (Flute Duet) Rebekah Dutton (Flute & Duet), Zach Henz (Clarinet), Zoe Frosty (Clarinet), Kate Jones (Flute), Jacob Tellman (Trumpet), Austin Murray (Horn), Sebastian Astolfo (Tenor Sax), Ethan Sturgeon (Baritone Sax)

Proficient Ratings: Austin Murray (Trumpet) & Tozcha Bean (Euphonium)

The Percussion Ensemble competed at the 8th annual Bluegrass Pageant of Guards and Percussion sponsored by TriState Marching Arts and hosted at Bryan Station.

The Band performed at the KMEA Large Ensemble Assessment at Frederick Douglass HS in March.  The Concert Band (Grade 3) performed The American Way by Karl King, Triumphant Fanfare by Richard Saucedo and Little English Suite by Clare Grundman.  They received a Proficient rating.  The Symphonic Band (Grade 4) performed Bravura by C.E.Duble, Fire! by Gary Gilroy and Imperatrix by Alfred Reed.  They received a Proficient rating. 

The Jazz Band hosted its 6th annual Jazz Dinner Dance in our cafeteria.  Dinner was catered by Blue Door Smokehouse, and the evening featured silent auctions and an opening performance by the Bryan Station Middle School Jazz Band. The HS Jazz Band performed last.

In May the Bands performed a Spring Concert.  Selections included Chester Variations by Elliot del Borgo and Pirates of the Carribean by Klaus Baldet for the Concert Band.  The Symphonic Band performed Star Wars: The Force Awakens by  John Williams, Rhythm of the Winds by Frank Erickson (conducted by Dalton Bates, Student Teacher) and The Eagles on Tour.
